Personal Electronics Repair Proceed With Caution}

Submitted by: Stewart Wrighter

New technology tools are amazing. They are fantastic! They have changed the way we communicate and gather information. How did we ever get along without them? In fact, there should be a statute of Steve Jobs erected somewhere in Sun Valley as a tribute to the leadership of Apple in new and innovative devices. As wonderful as these new devices are, they do not come cheap. What happens if you break one? Of course, you probably own multiple communication devices, so you just go to one of the “other” devices, and Google “replace iPad screen” or “MacBook replacement screen” to order the correct part to fix it or maybe not.

Fixing and repairing intricate electronic devices is not for everyone. Inside of these things there are parts that have never before been seen by a normal human being. The people that designed, developed, and constructed some of these technologically advanced devices are not “normal.” Replacing the spark plug in your lawnmower does not compare. Remember Emmett in the old “Andy Griffith” show? He was a small appliance repair Man. When he was in his shop you could see toasters, vacuum cleaners, coffee pots, and the like surrounding him. These were appliances that need repair, and Emmett, when he wasn’t sharing quips with Floyd the Barber or Andy himself, would fix these things. And it was a normal guy. But the Emmett’s of the world are practically extinct. They have been replaced by superhuman “fix-it guys” that very few of us ever see.

Have you ever looked into one of these new-fangled electronic marvels? They contain these little metal ribbons and tiny chips that are somehow connected together and cause communication to happen. If you even dare to open one, your warranty will automatically be void. But there are those who dare to do so. You can find them on YouTube. There are hundreds of people who not only dare to open their electronics, but they are bold enough to make a video to show you how to do the same.

Do you want to fix your own electronic device? If so, proceed with caution. Yes, the YouTube videos are very helpful. Chances are you can find the one that fits your exact need. But, once more, it must be emphasized that taking matters into your own hands will void your warranty. Now, if you do not have a warranty, or your warranty has expired, there is less at stake. What you should do, is try to figure out how much time and money will be invested in your repair so that you will know whether it is worth the effort. If you do decide to go ahead with the repair, make sure that you order the correct parts. Usually, the website where you order the parts has so many entries that it is difficult to figure out which one is the one that you need. Be aware that if you order the wrong part, you will have to pay shipping to return the incorrect article as well as a second shipping charge to get the right piece.

Fixing your own electronics can be a rewarding experience. However, it can be one of the most frustrating experiences on the planet. Proceed with caution.
